Pyrodex RS Black Powder In Stock
Hodgdon Pyrodex RS can be used in all calibers of percussion muzzleloading rifles and shotguns. It has a wide application of uses and is the most versatile powder in the Pyrodex line. Like all grades of Pyrodex, it burns cleaner and produces less fouling than black powder. RS compares to 2F blackpowder on a particle size basis.
Note:
- Do not exceed the loads displayed in the reloaders guide.
- Never mix any two powders regardless of type, brand, or source.
- Never substitute any smokeless powder for Black Powder or any Black Powder substitute.

While you still absolutely must clean your rifle after a day at the range, RS is significantly less corrosive than old-school black powder. If I get home late from a hunt and can’t clean the bore until the next morning, I don’t have to worry about immediate rusting or pitting. It’s a huge lifesaver.

I own a .50 cal rifle, a .54 cal traditional hunter, and a .58 cal military replica. Instead of buying three different types of powder, I run Pyrodex RS in all of them. It has the perfect granulation size to burning-rate ratio to handle all medium-to-large bores effortlessly.

I use this for late-season hunting in Saskatchewan. Even when the temperature plummets well below freezing, I’ve never experienced a lazy ignition or a ‘click-boom’ delay. It burns hot and fast, provided you use a reliable premium percussion cap.

I get my best groupings when loading RS under a 0.490 patched round ball with a pre-lubed flax wad over the powder. The granulation size of the RS creates a tight, consistent seal that builds uniform pressure. My chronograph spreads are remarkably low for a black powder substitute.

I load Pyrodex RS in an old side-by-side percussion 12-gauge for our spring turkey hunting season. Equal volumes of powder and shot produce incredibly uniform patterns at 25 yards. The smoke cloud is massive, but the results in the field speak for themselves

I use RS to load black powder cartridge rifle (BPCR) rounds for my old trapdoor rifle. It drops smoothly into the long brass cases, compresses beautifully under a veggie wad, and leaves a soft fouling that doesn’t harden up between stages. It lets me stay competitive without the hassle of sourcing real black powder
Okie Hog –
I use this for a replica .75 calibre Brown Bess musket. While I use a finer powder for the priming pan, RS is the main charge in the barrel. It gives a fantastic, historically accurate boom and smoke trail while projecting the large round balls accurately enough to hit steel silhouettes consistently.

Unlike modern smokeless powders that have a sharp, snappy recoil, Pyrodex RS delivers a classic, heavy, rolling push. Even when loading it up to 100 grains behind a heavy conical bullet for moose hunting, the recoil is highly manageable and comfortable to shoot all afternoon.

I was hunting blacktails on Vancouver Island in a steady, cold drizzle. I kept a muzzle mitt over the barrel, but moisture always seeps into a sidelock. When a buck stepped out at 60 yards, the Pyrodex RS ignited instantly without a hangfire. It handles damp field conditions incredibly well if you prep your flash channel properly.

The legal regulations for storing true explosive black powder in a residential home up here are incredibly strict. Since Pyrodex is classified as a propellant propellant, it falls under standard smokeless storage rules. It gives me total peace of mind regarding compliance while still letting me enjoy traditional shooting.

Hodgdon does a great job with their packaging. The plastic bottle is tough, and the flip-top lid seals tightly against humidity. I reload out in an unheated garage workshop, and despite the ambient humidity changes, the powder stays perfectly dry and free-flowing inside the bottle.

With shooting costs skyrocketing everywhere, loading muzzleloaders with Pyrodex RS remains one of the cheapest ways to spend a Saturday afternoon at the gun club. A single pound goes a very long way when you’re shooting 70-grain target loads. Unbeatable value.

Because our muzzleloader hunting season here is short, a single one-pound jug lasts me a few years. As long as you keep the cap tight and store it in a dry closet, it stays perfectly fresh. I just fired off some charges from a jug I opened three years ago, and the velocity and ignition were as flawless as day one.

I bought my first black-powder rifle this summer and was a bit intimidated by the loading process. Pyrodex RS is incredibly forgiving. Because it meters safely by volume rather than weight, it’s very easy to learn the fundamentals of traditional shooting without worrying about the strict storage laws of true black powder.
